Creating a Sustainable Region
Birmingham and the West Midlands overall is leading in contributing to the national target of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 whilst addressing health inequality and driving inclusive growth.
Our ‘Energy Capital’ initiative aims to establish the region as the global-capital for energy systems innovation and marketing development, associated with its energy, waste, and transport infrastructure.
Sustainability West Midlands is the sustainability champion for the region. The are not-for profit company that works with organisations within the public and voluntary sectors. Their role is to act as a catalyst for change through our advice to leaders, to develop practical solutions with our members and share success through the communications.
The innovative Low Carbon Working Group is run by Sustainability West Midlands in partnership with the Innovation Alliance West for the Midlands. It is a cross-sector network aiming to build and connect the innovative low carbon ecosystem of the West Midlands focusing especially on the WM Local Industrial Strategy sector strengths of low carbon technology, energy and clean growth, future mobility and sustainable construction.
The region is home to some of the leading energy research and innovation institutions in the UK including the Birmingham Energy Institute and its Thermal Energy Research Accelerator project at the University of Birmingham and the European Bioenergy Research Institute at Aston University.
We are on a journey to cleaner air with a Clear Air Zone, to reduce levels of NO2 in air to a maximum average of 40ug/m3 as soon as possible.
Leading the way with Green Accreditations
Birmingham and the West Midlands Growth Company incentivising a sustainable future.
- West Midlands Growth Company introduced a fully-funded Green Tourism and Green Meetings incentive for West Midlands visitor economy businesses.
- Funding up to 200 visitor economy businesses, aligned with the region’s tourism strategy. This will enable us to meet the requirements of the Global Destination Sustainability (GDS) index, positioning the region at the forefront of positive change and enhancing its reputation in domestic and international markets. Enabling sustainable economic growth for the future of our region.
- Several partners within the region already have accreditation from Green meetings, from Bronze to Gold with leading brands such as Leonardo Hotels and Edgbaston Park Hotel, which we will encourage more businesses to join and help enhance sustainable practices across the sector, supporting visitor choice, regeneration, and environmental improvements in the region.
