SportAccord 2024
In April 2024, Birmingham and the West Midlands hosted the prestigious SportAccord World Sport & Business Summit at the ICC Birmingham.
Known as the "Davos of Sport" or the "Olympics for sporting event organisers", SportAccord brought together more than 1,800 leaders and decision-makers from 65 different countries involved in the business of sport for a packed agenda of high-level meetings, conferences, exhibition, networking and social events.
“This is a unique gathering of our family and the only place where all the International Federations (IFs) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) meet’’
Prof Dr Uğur Erdener,
President, SportAccord
Why bring SportAccord to the West Midlands?
The West Midlands has a rich heritage in the sporting world, from inventing lawn tennis and the football league to crafting medals and trophies for the likes of Wimbledon and the FA Cup in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. The region is also no stranger to hosting regular national and international sporting events, and it fully understands the positive impact these can bring from a reputational and economic impact. Recent research from West Midlands Growth Company revealed that sports tourism was responsible for one in seven visits to the region, adding more than £1.9 billion to the West Midlands economy. The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games alone contributed £1.2 billion to the UK economy, with nearly half of that being in the West Midlands.
Therefore, the chance to bring the sporting community to the region through SportAccord was not to be missed. The event was supported by Major Events Fund drawing on legacy funding from the Commonwealth Games.
Across an 18 month period, through a series of written proposals, meetings and visits to the region from the SportAccord team, Birmingham and the West Midlands was selected as the host for the 2024 event. A task made all the more significant due to the event having not been held since before the Covid Pandemic, and having only been in the UK once before in its 20-year history.
A collaborative approach
Like the hugely successful Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, delivering SportAccord was a collaborative effort between SportAccord themselves and regional and national stakeholders including DCMS, DBT, UK Sport, the West Midlands Combined Authority, West Midlands Growth Company and Birmingham City Council; and a team of volunteers, who performed their duties with the same energy and enthusiasm that lit up the games two years ago.
The result was an event which – as in 2022 – captured the imagination and highlighted what is possible in a young, diverse and growing region such as the West Midlands.
“The ICC was the ideal choice to host such a high-profile global sporting conference in the West Midlands.
“The venue’s central location at the heart of Birmingham city centre helped to create a unique ‘SportAccord village’ environment, helping to enhance collaboration and networking opportunities"

A packed programme
SportAccord delivered a wide-ranging conference programme incorporating a Plenary Conference, as well as themed programming relating to important aspects of the sports industry, including;
- HealthAccord
- CityAccord
- LawAccord
- MediaAccord
In addition to the conference programme, partners and exhibitors delivered industry specific workshops, offering delegates an opportunity to learn about the latest technology, innovations and thought leadership. There was also a “Speakers’ Corner” which gave a spotlight for speakers to present content to conference delegates, providing expert insights and stimulating discussion. The event also included wider knowledge sharing and networking opportunities with The Pulse, Recharge Zone, Media Zone and a dedicated programme of morning and cultural activities. These included walking, running and kayak tours of the city, yoga, golf at the Belfry and a racing experience at F1 Arcade.
A resounding success
SportAccord 2024 proved to be an energetic, enlightening and memorable event for delegates, organisers and volunteers.
Prof Dr Uğur Erdener, and outgoing Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) President, Francesco Ricci Bitti, both proclaimed the 2024 edition of SportAccord in Birmingham and the West Midlands as “the best to date”.
Delegates gave the event an overall satisfaction score of 9 out of 10 in the post-event survey.
“It was a great event and I really enjoyed my time in Birmingham. Thank you so much for having me. I wouldn’t hesitate for even a second to recommend Birmingham & West Midlands to esports and sports organisers in the future!”

Vice President & Co-Founder, Epic Games
A transformative legacy
It is clear that the SportAccord effect will last long beyond five days in April 2024, and even clearer is that Birmingham and the West Midlands has cemented its reputation as a distinguished global leader in sport, with a bright sporting future.
