About

This multi award winning friends and family run business is bringing Sri Lankan street food dishes and Cocotails to Birmingham.

In recent years, Sri Lankan food has been having a moment, with The Times identifying it as a key food trend, and BBC Food attributing its popularity to 'most of the food world looking towards exciting new cuisines.'

The Coconut Tree’s take on the cuisine is made up of smaller tapas-style dishes embracing plants, fish and meat - it’s a menu that naturally offers something for everyone.

The menu at The Coconut Tree is made up of smaller tapas-style plates including ‘Hot Battered Spicy Cuttlefish’; ‘Hoppers’ – bowl shaped coconut pancakes served with sambal & Sri Lankan Salsa; ‘Cashew Nuts’ and green peas soaked and cooked in coconut cream;‘Cheesy Colombo’ – cheese cubes fried and mixed Colombo style; and ‘Black Pork’ which consists of diced pork belly cooked in 30 roasted spices.

Larger sharing dishes include their signature ‘Devilled Dishes’ - meat or fish cooked in spices, then stir fried with traditional banana peppers and finished off with crushed chillies (their own secret recipe!). Finally, their ‘Kotthu’ is a fine example of a local hybrid and served all over the country as a luxurious street food. It’s made with finely chopped roti and cooked with egg, vegetables and / or meat.

It's a menu that fits their mantra in that ‘there is something for everyone and everyone is welcome to the table. The menu is 70% veggie, 80% GF and there are 16 vegan dishes, all the dishes are bursting with different flavours native to Sri Lanka.

The Coconut Tree also recently unveiled a new cocktail menu; featuring 18 ‘Cocotails’ in total, the revamped range includes seven brand-new cocotails, along with updated recipes for some of the restaurant’s most popular drinks. For more information, visit:https://www.thecoconut-tree.com/cocotails.

Enjoy the warmth of Sri Lankan hospitality & cuisine, served fresh from the kitchen ‘as it comes’. The dishes are rich in Ceylon spices with recipes going back generations from the founders' very own parents' kitchens. Whilst curry dishes are featured, The Coconut Tree’s curries never use masala, typical lemongrass or other more common Asian flavours; instead promising plates of flavourful food infused with authentic Sri Lankan spices.

The Coconut Tree brings something unique when you walk through the door. An unforgettable experience, something more than great food and drink. They offer a stripped back, laid back, cool island vibe – served up with the warmest Sri Lankan hospitality.

Everyone’s welcome to the table. “To bring authentic and youthful Sri Lankan island vibes to our customers and communities, taking them on a journey through vibrant, freshly prepared Sri Lankan street food with artisan drinks in a warm, relaxed ambience with stripped back décor and great tunes. Good food. Good people. Good times.” (who said this) The independent, boutique operators are front-runners in bringing fresh Sri Lankan cuisine to the UK, and despite the massive challenges facing hospitality over the last 2 years - The Coconut Tree team is holding fast to their ambitions to put Sri Lankan street food firmly on the UK culinary map.

Birmingham is the 9th restaurant in The Coconut Tree portfolio and will join branches in Bath, Reading, Cardiff, Bristol, Oxford, Cheltenham and Bournemouth.
