THE NEC Group switched off its lights in support of WWF’s Earth Hour, the world’s largest display of action to tackle climate change.

By turning off the lights for one hour at its four venues, The National Exhibition Centre, The International Convention Centre, National Indoor Arena and the LG Arena, the company saved energy equivalent to a flight from Birmingham to Heathrow.

Engineering services manager Phil Dyke said: “Being ‘green’ is important to our organisation.

“We’re proud to have the Carbon Trust award for sustained reduction of our carbon emissions and have a plan of ongoing initiatives such as the installation of electrical smart metering and construction of a biomass combined heat and power generator at The NEC.”

Colin Butfield, head of campaigns at WWF-UK said: “We were delighted to have The NEC Group’s support for Earth Hour.

“From London to Sydney, New York and Singapore, people across the world joined us to switch off their lights. It’s an urgent message that we want to reduce the impact our energy system has on the planet.”
