Medical association wins for Birmingham

28th Mar 2011

The ICC Birmingham has signed contracts with five national and international associations which the convention centre management expects to generate more than £33m for the West Midlands region, and bringing in 8,000 people to Britain’s second city.

ICC MD Nick Waight said the five conference wins were a positive sign of “both a growing confidence in the association market, and our continued reputation for being able to successfully host a diverse range of prestigious events”.

The 18th Annual Conference for the British HIV Association (BHIVA) will bring around 850 delegates to Birmingham for three days for the first time in 2012.

Faarid Patel, MD of Mediscript, organisers of the event said: “In the 17 years the Association has been holding the annual conference it has never been to Birmingham and we are very keen to take it there.”

Another first for The ICC is the British Blood Transfusion Society’s (BBTS) annual conference, contracted for October 2013. This will be a two-day meeting for 800 delegates.

The Royal College of Ophthalmologists has signed a three-year deal for events to be held in May 2011, 2014 and 2016 for 1,300 delegates, and Birmingham Paediatric Cardiac Conference, organised by surgeons from the Cardiac Care Unit of Birmingham Children’s Hospital in June 2011 for 300 delegates.

A new technology project will roll out a destination mobile app this summer across The ICC and the CCD. “Increasing quality of customer service and moving to closer organiser partnerships were also new strategies for 2011 at both NEC managed venues,” said Waight.
