Conference Aston proves perfect venue for leading global conferences

Conference Aston – Birmingham’s largest residential conferencing venue – has welcomed delegates from around the world to a number of prestigious international conferences this year.

Over 300 delegates from 28 countries – from as far away as Australia and Brazil – joined colleagues from the UK for the ninth International Conference on Urban Pests (ICUP) in the summer, while a further 275 visitors converged on Conference Aston in September for the International Myopia Conference.

Paul Bunce, Marketing Manager at Conference Aston, which is part of Aston University, said it was good news for the city that it continued to attract prestigious international events.

“We’ve seen a real surge in the number of international training events, meetings and conferences being held at Conference Aston, which is helping to further boost Birmingham’s reputation as a global meeting place,” he said.

“Between August 2016 and July 2017 we welcomed 60,000 visitors, and thousands more residential delegates and day conference guests will come through our doors over the next few months.”

Dr Davies, divisional technical adviser at Killgerm Chemicals, attained his PhD in medical entomology and microbiology at Aston University in 2014 and is chair of the organising committee of the ICUP conference.

He said: “Having been a PhD student at Aston University I knew the city very well, which meant I had the confidence that Birmingham would be of interest to international and local delegates.

“It is a hugely underrated city, offering an exciting and energetic mix of culture, entertainment and discovery – delegates need to be able to have a good time away from the lecture theatres and England’s ‘second city’ certainly provides this.

“We had 37 different nationalities attending ICUP 2017, so the close proximity of Conference Aston to Birmingham International Airport was crucial for us too and the good train links to London were beneficial for those flying into the capital.”

In April, Conference Aston was awarded a TripAdvisor gold GreenLeader award for its commitment to environmentally friendly practices.
