Shropshire

Ironbridge Telford International Centre

Tucked away on the English and Welsh borders, Shropshire has been surprising visitors for years. Whether it’s a day trip to discover some of the county’s many attractions or a relaxing short break, you’ll find the perfect location – as well as the sort of warmth and hospitality that encourages friends to return. Plenty to see, plenty to do – that’s Shropshire in a nutshell. Starting with its vast range of attractions, there’s the Ironbridge Gorge Museums (a World Heritage Site), Hawkstone Park and Follies, the museum at RAF Cosford and the Severn Valley Railway – not to mention Stokesay Castle, one of England’s finest fortified manor houses. With some 32 castles and stately homes, you can explore English history in all its glory. Ludlow Castle is a must see, along with the Roman City at Wroxeter. The county also blooms with many national garden collections and speciality sites including Stapeley Water Gardens and Wollerton Old Hall.

For the more active, Shropshire’s walking, cycling, riding, golfing, fishing, gliding and hot air ballooning are legendary. A cruise along the Llangollen Canal can’t be missed either. Or if it’s time for a little retail therapy, take a stroll through bustling towns that offer the kind of specialist independent shops that many other counties lost years ago. When it comes to food and drink, no other county can compete with the quality and diversity of its local produce. Markets laden with fresh fruit and vegetables, traditional local butchers and bakers, delicatessens on almost every corner… you’ll soon see why Shropshire is a gourmet’s idea of heaven.

Of course, all of this terrific produce means that the eating out experience is second to none. With its Michelin-starred restaurants, no wonder Ludlow has been described as ‘a little bit of France near the Welsh border.’
